How a simple idea over a cold beer ignited a regional recycling movement that has diverted over one billion glass bottles from landfills.
It Started with a Frustrating Problem
Back in 2009, Kansas Citians threw away an estimated 150 million glass bottles and jars every single year.
Before Ripple Glass was founded, there was no comprehensive glass recycling solution in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Curbside programs excluded glass because broken shards destroyed sorting equipment and contaminated paper streams.
The folks at Boulevard Brewing Company—the largest specialty craft brewer in the Midwest—found this reality unacceptable. They produced millions of bottles of beer each year, and knowing those bottles ended up buried forever in area landfills bothered them deeply.
So Boulevard joined forces with other local businesses, environmental champions, and community leaders with a bold ambition: If nobody else is going to solve this, we will build the solution ourselves.
Building the Infrastructure from Scratch
To make glass recycling work, two massive puzzles had to be solved: how to collect it conveniently, and where to send it so it actually got recycled.
The solution was twofold: First, build a dedicated, state-of-the-art processing facility right in Kansas City outfitted with cutting-edge optical color-sorting cameras. Second, partner with local grocery stores, community centers, and businesses to deploy unmistakable, bright purple collection bins where anyone could drop off bottles for free.
We partnered with Owens Corning right in Kansas City, KS, ensuring a reliable local destination for amber and green glass to be transformed into thermal fiberglass insulation, and container plants to convert clear glass into brand-new bottles.
From a KC Experiment to a Regional Movement
What began in Kansas City has rippled outward. Today, Ripple Glass operates hundreds of collection bins and commercial routes across Kansas, Missouri, the Atlanta metropolitan area, and St. Louis.
Through our Regional Glass Processing network, we partner with municipalities and haulers across the Midwest and Southeast, bringing glass recycling to communities that previously had no viable options. Together, our community of recyclers has diverted over 1 Billion bottles and counting!
